The power struggle between the states of the Sahel Alliance (Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) shows no signs of coming to an end.
On January 28, 2024, the three countries decided to withdraw from the organization. This decision follows the various sanctions imposed on these Sahel states by ECOWAS.
Indeed, ECOWAS did not hold back after the coups in Burkina Faso, Mali, and especially Niger. The institution even mentioned the use of force to restore constitutional order in Niger.
Following this decision, Mali and Burkina Faso have chosen to stand with Niger against ECOWAS. As a result, these countries have created the Sahel Alliance.
All these events led Claudy Siar to claim that the withdrawal of the three countries from ECOWAS was « predictable. » He wrote on X (Twitter): « I am surprised that some are surprised by this. »
The host called on all African countries to withdraw from the UN. He believes that the organization does not serve the interests of African countries.
« When you are mistreated in a house, you have to leave, » said Claudy Siar.
« That is why African countries must absolutely leave the UN and build their own international organization without cutting themselves off from the rest of the world. »
Siar’s proposition is controversial. Some argue that it is unrealistic and could harm the interests of African countries.
Nevertheless, the withdrawal of these three Sahel countries from ECOWAS is a significant event that could have important consequences for the future of Africa.
